Self-shielded flux-cored welding is a wire welding process in which a continuous hollow wire electrode is fed through the welding gun into the weld joint. Instead, a flux compound contained within the wire reacts with the welding arc to form a gas that protects the weld pool. A flux-cored wire is optimized to obtain performance not possible with a solid wire. For many welding applications like vertical-up welding, flat welding, welding over galvanized, or welding hard-to-weld steels, a flux-cored wire can do it better and faster. It also requires very clean steel.
