Large flange rivets, also known as POP rivets, nail rivets, break stem fasteners and blind fasteners, are permanent fasteners that feature wider flanges to provide extra fastening power in applications involving sheet metal or other large materials. These rivets feature a larger flange diameter to provide adequate coverage for oversized or irregularly shaped holes, and to provide a more secure hold for applications involving soft materials. To join two pieces of material, the body of the rivet is inserted into a pre-drilled hole, then a nail rivet tool is used to pull the top of the mandrel to expand the body, clamping the two materials together. The force of the rivet tool then pops off the mandrel, leaving behind the domed head blind rivet. The steel mandrel is pulled into or against the rivet body, breaking at or near the junction of the mandrel shank and its upset end. The steel mandrel gives this style rivet greater tensile and shear values than aluminum rivets with aluminum mandrels. They should be used when fastening materials with similar mechanical and physical properties.
