The plasma gas is full of particles that race past the electrode, pulling atoms away from the hot electrode surface. This is normal wear and tear, but it works on the emitting element. Pits are created on the surface. If damaged electrodes aren’t replaced in time, there could be serious harm to the torch. The electrode could even explode within the torch.
