6061 T-6 is a precipitation hardening aluminum alloy containing magnesium and silicon as major alloying elements.
Known for good machinability and good weldability.
After welding, the properties near the weld may become 6061-0, leading to a loss of strength of about 80%.
The material can be re-heat-treated to restore -T4 or -T6 temper for the whole piece.
Post-welding, the material can naturally age and regain some of its strength.
6061 is one of the most common alloys for general-purpose use.
Frequently used in the construction of aircraft structures (e.g., wings, fuselages), bicycle frames, boat building, and various automotive parts.
